Every week an athlete, coach or recruit gets in trouble with Twitter. Actually, it’s more often than that.
Around 7pm CT last night, Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert Tweeted: “Big recruiting day tomorrow here at ND. Looking forward to meeting and hangin with 5 star Fort Wayne native @JaeeSmiff9ENT
Eifert’s eagerness to meet recruit Jaylon Smith may be a violation against NCAA restrictions on a current student-athlete publicizing a prospective student-athlete’s visit to campus, which could be considered an “institutional” violation.
“We’re aware of the tweet and it has been forwarded to our compliance office where they will process it appropriately,” athletic department spokesman Brian Hardin said in a statement.
“We take any potential violation of NCAA rules very seriously and we will never compromise on matters of NCAA compliance. Ultimately, this will serve as an excellent teaching moment for all of our teams and student-athletes.”
Smith is a linebacker from Bishop Luers High School in Eifert’s hometown of Fort Wayne, Ind. Since that Twitter username belongs to him, the message seemingly is in violation of NCAA bylaw 13.10.5, which refers to publicizing a prospective student-athlete’s visit.
As is always the case in situations like this, the tweet was later deleted.
